STEM after school at Wood Acres

Winter 2018

The Great Adventure Lab is an after-school science enrichment program offering our classes in 50+ schools in the D.C. area. We’ve taught thousands of kids how to write their first robotics programs or video game programs (or both!). Student to adult ratio of 7:1 or better for most classes.

For full descriptions, photos and reviews of our classes and birthday parties, see our website: http://thegreatadventurelab.com.

Intro to Robotics A and B  are two independent classes. Same curriculum, different projects.  Take one or both in any order!

Here’s a fun introduction to the world of robotics and mechanical engineering, designed especially for grades 1 and 2.  We’ll learn what programs do and how to write our own.  Each class meeting, we’ll build a different project and then use motors, sensors, and our own programs to bring our creations to life!  We’ll build crawlerbots, windmills, planes … and more!

Areas of Exploration: Robotics, Programming, Mechanical Engineering

Class Format: Seven 60-min. meetings, once per week.

Tuition: $135 per student; min 11 / max 14 students.

Storybook Science D, Grades K-1

Tue 3:45-4:45 pm

Mythbusters isn’t just for big kids. We’ll start each class with a storybook and then do hands-on science experiments to test and recreate story elements or solve problems in the story. In this class we’ll make kits, test toys, explore chromatography and more.

Storybook Science classes A, B, C and D follow the same format with new books and experiments. Classes may be taken in any order but may not be repeated.

Areas of Exploration: Aerodynamics, Biology, Physics, Geology,  Paleontology, Chemistry, Engineering

Class Format: Seven 60-min. meetings, once per week.

Tuition: $125 tuition plus $30 supply fee per student; min 11 / max 14 students.

Jan 23, 30, Feb 6, 13, 20, 27, Mar 6

We’ll use the Positive Engagement Project’s curriculum to build math skills using decks of cards.  We’ll play games covering addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percents, decimals, patterns, positive and negative integers … children will play appropriate games for their math levels.

Areas of Exploration: Math

Class Format: Seven 60-min. meetings, once per week.

Tuition: $125 per student. min 11 / max 14 students.

3-D Design, Grades 4-5

Students will sharpen their spatial awareness as we learn how to use 3-D software to bring our ideas to life! Students will design their own objects, which they print on a printer. We’ll also bring our own 3-D printer to class to play with and print some of our simpler objects.

Areas of Exploration:  3-D Spatial Visualization, Design,

Class Format: Seven 90-min. meetings, once per week.

Tuition: $205 tuition plus $10 materials fee per student; min 9 / max 10 students, 2 instructors, no aide.

Space Engineers, Grades 3-5curiosity-rover-300x168.jpg

Fri 3:45-4:45pm
Jan 19, Feb 2, 9, 16, 23, Mar 9, 16

Students will tackle challenges that real NASA engineers face, like how to land a rover on Mars without breaking it (not easy for astronauts -it’s like an egg drop on steroids!). We’ll also learn about hovercraft and try our hands at liftoff!!  Grab your astronaut helmets, since this class will take you OUT of this world!

Areas of Exploration: Engineering, Physics.

Class Format: Seven 60-min. meetings, once per week.

Tuition: $145 tuition plus $30 materials fee per student; min 11 / max 14 students.
